More than 50 percent of women in the country who are now in their mid 20s were married before they turned 18. Almost 18 percent of them were below the age of 15. In 2013, Bangladesh enacted new legislation for the benefit of its estimated 70 million children, the Children Act, 2013, officially known as the Shishu Ain, 2013 , stating that it was enacted for the purpose of implementing the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), 1990.
